Prepare Your Plot It’s important to understand the features and size of the area you have to work with before you go on to designing your new garden. Carrying out a full site analysis will help you do this. Start by mesauring the area of space that you would like to have as your garden landscape. Measure from the corners of the house to the back boundary lines and sides, so you can accurately locate your house within the plot. Remember to include measurements of all features – walls, driveways, trees, anything permanent that you wish to incorporate into the final design. This measuring process will also generate ideas and spark inspiration. Here’s a brief checklist of other things that you might like to think about: Existing plants and trees: Do you want to keep them? Should they be moved? Will they work with your new design ideas? Views: Looking at the view from your house is as important as the view when standing in your garden. Is there anything you want to shield or make a feature of? Slopes or land elevations: Will these need to be altered in your new design? Think about drainage for any new areas. Locate all utilities: Where do the electricity/ gas/ water/ sewage pipes run? Always find out before any digging begins. Wind current and direction: Are there any areas of your garden exposed to high winds? Do you need a screen to shield parts of the garden from the wind? Vehicle access: Do you have access to the garden if you need to park a car or caravan? Storage space: do you need to store garden furniture, a barbecue, kids’ bikes or toys? Water: Do you have any existing water features? Would you like any?
